SOS: Hair loss due to pregnancy! 

If you are currently pregnant, or have been pregnant, you may have suffered from hair loss. This phenomenon is more common in women and is therefore usually no reason to panic. HAIR LOSS DURING PREGNANCY 

Hair loss or thinning during pregnancy is more common after birth and rarer during pregnancy. Yet this does happen, it is a body reaction and it cannot do any harm. During pregnancy, the body's hormonal balance is disturbed, which can lead to a reaction in the hair follicles.  

The reason for hair loss during early pregnancy, or during the prenatal period, is an increase in the hormones estrogen and progesterone, which can cause hair to become more brittle and thinner. 

Pregnancy can also cause other problems such as iron deficiency, which can also lead to thinning hair. Some women also experience additional hair loss in the months after birth due to an imbalance of thyroid hormones.  

HAIR LOSS AFTER CHILDHOOD 

Due to increased hormonal levels during pregnancy, many women retain more hair than usual. This is due to a disruption of the hair life cycle. This is where the stereotypical image of a pregnant woman with a fuller, shiny head of hair comes from.  

Maintaining more hair during pregnancy therefore often leads to excessive hair loss after birth as the body adjusts hormone levels back to normal. This extreme hair loss after pregnancy is nothing to worry about, but can of course be experienced as annoying.
